Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 yellow onion, finely chopped
1 green bell pepper, diced
3 garlic cloves, minced
6 tablespoons salted butter
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
4 slices provolone cheese
1/3 cup mayonnaise
2 teaspoons Italian seasoning, divided
1 French bread loaf (about 1 pound)
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook 1 pound ground beef until fully browned. Drain any excess grease.
2. Add 1 yellow onion and 1 green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook for 6–8 minutes until soft and slightly caramelized.
3. Stir in 3 minced garlic cloves and 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning. Cook for 1 minute. Mix in 1/3 cup mayonnaise and turn off the heat.
4. Slice the French bread loaf in half lengthwise and hollow out a bit from the center of both halves.
5. Melt 6 tablespoons salted butter in a small saucepan. Add 2 minced garlic cloves and 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning. Brush this mixture on both bread halves.
6. Sprinkle half the mozzarella and 2 slices of provolone on the bottom half. Add the beef mixture. Top with remaining mozzarella and provolone slices.
7. Place the top bread half over the filling. Wrap the loaf in foil and bake at 375°F for 15 minutes.
8. Unwrap and bake uncovered for an additional 5 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
9. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, slice into 10 pieces, and serve warm.
Notes
For best results, use a fresh loaf that’s soft but not too airy so it holds the filling well.
Don’t skip hollowing out the bread—it prevents sogginess and gives the filling room.
You can substitute ground beef with sliced ribeye or mushrooms for a different spin.
