  • Author: Mia McKenny

Description

Take everything you love about rich, caramelized French onion soup and smash it between soft, toasted slider buns with juicy, seasoned beef. French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes are the cozy comfort food mash-up you didn’t know you needed. They bring a melty, savory punch to the classic sloppy joe, and trust us—this one goes way beyond weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons butter

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

1 pound ground beef (85/15 recommended)

2 cloves garlic, minced

0.5 teaspoon dried thyme

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

0.5 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 cup shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese

8 slider buns

Salt, to taste

Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

1. In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for 25–30 minutes, stirring often, until deeply golden and caramelized.

2. Push the onions to one side of the skillet. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.

3. Stir in minced garlic and dried thyme. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

4. Sprinkle flour over the meat and stir well to coat. Cook for another minute.

5. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Scrape up any brown bits from the skillet and stir. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.

6. Preheat broiler. Spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom halves of the slider buns on a baking sheet.

7. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the top and broil for 1–2 minutes until melted.

8. Add bun tops and serve hot, garnished with parsley if desired.

Notes

Use low-sodium beef broth to better control salt levels.

Gruyère gives a more authentic French onion flavor, but mozzarella works in a pinch.

Caramelizing the onions slowly is key—don’t rush it!
